FAQ

You can’t do this with a Boxster, SLK, Z3, Vette, Miata, RX-7 or 300 ZX...

The 1992 968 was available with a rear seat as standard and a rear deck as an option. Almost no one ordered the rear seat so Porsche deleted it for 1993. I have kids ages 8 & 4. They love to ride in Daddy’s "Porch". So I did the pictured modification (see below).

The rear seat belts are from a 1990 944 Cab. Cost $70.00 from Oklahoma Foreign. The rear seat from the 944 cab will fit if you take out the carpet from your 968. But if you leave the carpet in you can still use the rear deck.

1.  The rear deck is held in by a bolt (17mm) to the outboard side (2) and a small nut stud (2) to a welded clip at the rear (8 or 9mm). Move your front seats forward for a little room. Remove bolts & nuts. The nut is tedious because you can’t see it. There are also some spacer washers. Use a box end wrench and feel your way. Once it is loose, remove with fingers.

2.  You should now be able to lift out the rear deck. The bar has no structural function for the car. It is only attached to the deck. You can now see the old seat wells, the rear clip and the bolt hole. Remove the brackets on the underneath side of the rear deck . Reinstall nut and washers on the now exposed stud. This will keep you from losing the hardware. The deck can now be taken in and out at will. It just sits back there held in by friction.

3.  Install the outboard seat belt (Receiver) with the same bolt you just took out of the deck bracket. On the inboard belt (Reel) feel for the flat spot (this is where Porsche used to install the belt) on the transaxle hump. Drill a ¼ " hole. Buy very short 5/8" lag bolt from local hardware store. The shortest I could find was 1 5/8’ long. Install lag bolt. You could also thru bolt this if you want.

4.  Take a hammer, yes hammer, and beat down the rear clip (picture #2) and tuck it under the carpet.

5.  Reinstall the rear deck over the new "seats". The seats are comfortable for small children for up to an hour. Don’t be taking long week-end jaunts with your kids. Adults will not fit.

You will also be amazed how much stuff you can get in a Cabriolet without the deck. I actually drive it to the Home Depot. It is also much more luggage space for a trip.

Not comfortable drilling into your baby?? Install just one belt. Reel on left outboard. Receiver on right outboard. One belt goes all the way across.

Hey these bolt holes are awful handy. I’m working on a roll bar design that will bolt into outboard holes and the rear "seat" back. How about a cross body brace? You could stiffen up your cab by having a bolt in brace made like a strut brace.
