This time of year, many 968 owners are thinking about how to afford that new
set of track tires or alloy wheels. Rather than pouring money into your car, take some
advice from me and turn your 968 into a profit center!
Instead of storing my 968 for the winter, I put it to use as a high
performance snowplowing machine. With my 968, I can plow 30 driveways in the time it takes
my mother to plow 10 driveways with a dump truck.
Now, I know what you are thinking, "Porsches are not designed for
snow plowing and the tires will keep slipping." This is not a problem with my 968
though, because I have a "limited slip" transaxle. (Interesting side note:
Microsoft Word thinks the correct spelling of transaxle is transsexual, but I am sure
there are no limited slip transsexuals in my Porsche. Obviously not programmed by a 968
driver, probably a Volkswagen Cabriolet owner.) If your drive wheels do slip though, just
open the hatch and shovel sand into the back of the car to get sufficient weight over the
drive wheels.
The installation of a plow is actually quite simple and only requires a
minimum of modifications to your 968. First, go to your local Porsche dealer and explain
that you would like them to install a plow on your Porsche. This is a special order item,
so if the dealer says it can't be done, begin yelling at him. Say things like "Do you
have any idea to whom you are speaking!" or "By working here, you are depriving
a village somewhere of an idiot!" If you berate him enough, he will attach a plow to
your Porsche.
The plow setup comes as a package, Porsche part number 944.194.984.01. The
dealer will install a small joystick lever under your dash to control up/down and
left/right angles of the plow. Two electrical connectors will be mounted in the front
grille of the car for connection to the plow, which has electrically powered hydraulic
systems for moving the plow.
The unit is quick to hookup to 968 models. Above the front license plate
and behind a black plastic cover is a threaded hole where the plow attaches. This is often
mistaken for a towing point.
Once installed, the package works flawlessly and your Porsche can begin
putting cash in your pocket. For more information, contact Porsche's Snow Removal
