2002 Petit Le Mans  > Posted 20021020
Last weekend saw the running of the 5th Petit Le Man at Road Atlanta.  Your webmaster hung out with two great friends, Michael and Laura, who also happen to run a 968 (and a couple of hot S4s, too).  We ran into William Wetmore, a 968.netter out of South Carolina, and Mark Baker, a former 968 owner who thankfully still has his 356.

The weather was absolutely perfect Friday and Saturday.  Michael and Laura setup their tent overlooking turns 10A and 10B.  One of the Jumbotrons was to our right, so we could keep up with the action on other parts of the track.  A good pit of time was spent in the pits, watching the crews feverishly work to keep their cars on the track.  The hill overlooking turn 5 was popular, too.  The passing through the Esses was fantastic -- I struggle to consistently hit the line during DEs, and that's with no traffic.  Prototype pilots were weaving around slower GT and GTS cars with wild abandon.

Amazingly, two of the four classes featured spirited battles down to the last few laps.  Ron Fellows, driving the #3 Pratt & Miller Corvette C5-R, tracked down the #33 Prodrive Ferrari 550 Maranello, driven by Tomas Enge, passing him with two laps to go.  Read the full report.  In the LMP900 class, Stefan Johansson, driving the #38 Champion Audi R8, sliced the lead of the #2 Infineon Audi R8 (masterfully driven by Rinaldo Capello) from over one minute to less than 30 seconds, before being forced to stop for fuel with only a handful of laps to go.  Read more.

Check the American Le Mans site for official results and additional stories, and mark your calendars for next year.
